Fodor's Review

It's not just the dimensions—13 acres, 27 buildings, more than 250,000 square feet—that are impressive here. The nation's largest center for contemporary visual and performing arts is also one of the finest in the world, drawing equally huge attendances for its exciting gallery exhibits, art shows, concerts, dance, and film presentations. The enormous space in the main gallery allows for massive exhibits that simply wouldn't fit anywhere else, such as Xu Bing's Phoenix, two gigantic birds with 90-foot wing spans, or Robert Rauschenberg's monumental The ¼ Mile or 2 Furlong Piece. The building, formerly housing the Sprague Electrical Company, is in itself a worthwhile exhibit, and also includes studios, cafés, shops, and the inspiring Kidspace gallery and studio.
