This 1870s Victorian and its gardens are tucked away in a beautiful wooded glen a short distance from Tanglewood. The innkeepers are music and literature aficionados and often have light opera, jazz, or Broadway tunes playing in the fireplace-lighted library, whose shelves contain copious volumes of verse. On some Saturdays, mostly in winter, poetry readings enhance afternoon tea. Rooms have antiques, light-pastel color schemes, and in many cases four-poster beds. Even the smallest units, with their eaved ceilings and cozy configurations, are very romantic. Pros: attentive innkeepers, delicious breakfast, afternoon tea with scones. Cons: thin towels, no TV.
