Although it's near Highway 2 and surrounded by parking lots, this thoroughly proper, if rather stuffy, hostelry compensates with a beautiful courtyard filled with fruit trees and a pond stocked with koi. English antiques furnish most of the spacious accommodations. The inner rooms, which have windows looking onto the courtyard, are best for summer stays. The outer rooms have less-distinguished views, but their fireplaces add appeal for winter visits. Bedtime is a delicious affair here—the beds are comfy, the linens are great, and they leave chocolate-chip cookies at turndown. Pros: good beds, nice bathrooms, flat-screen TVs. Cons: no coffeemakers in rooms, some guests complain of service lapses.
