Sanford Blackinton (1797-1885) was one of the wealthiest and most influential of the 19th-century mill owners in North Adams. These buildings at the corner of Holden and Main streets are two of his most important contributions to the way the city looks today. The first Blackinton Block on Holden Street is an ornate Italianate brick structure designed by Marcus Fayette Cummings of Troy, New York, the architect who had the single greatest impact on the architecture of North Adams during its Victorian heyday. The second Blackinton Block, facing Main Street, is distinguished by a fortress-style roof parapet.
