Steuben

Steuben

Steuben is the first town in Washington County if you're heading north on U.S. 1. The village is east of the highway, largely hidden by trees. At the least, drive through (there's a second turnoff if you miss the first one). Settled in the 1760s, Steuben was named for a Revolutionary War general at the suggestion of Jacob Townsley, an aide-de-camp to General George Washington. Townsley's 1785 Federal-style manse still stands on a hill across from the town center. Steuben has a lost-in-time feel. The 1850s Greek Revival Steuben Union Church beside the village green is a classic. The handsome Henry D. Moore Parish House next door, built in 1910, is a public library.
