Way Down East covers roughly a fourth of the state's coast, at least as the crow flies. A car is essential for exploring this vast swath of land. You can take a bus from Bangor that stops in towns along U.S. 1 and rent a car in Calais and Machias or just south of the region in Ellsworth. U.S. 1, usually following the coast slightly inland, is the main transportation spine. Towns highlighted are along this highway or nearby on the area's many bays and peninsulas, where cell-phone reception may be spotty at best (Canadian cell towers pick up calls in Lubec, Eastport, and Calais). The inland countryside is sprinkled with lakes and rolling with hills, so consider returning via an inland route.
