You can launch a kayak or canoe on the Machias River at this wonderfully secluded 50-acre property. Grouped along the river are three spacious cabins with pine interiors, kitchenettes, and decks. The historic cape house B&B has an antiques-filled parlor and a "keeping room" that looks much as it did when the home was built in 1776. The single guest room here is off the parlor in a modern addition with river-view deck and a whirlpool bath. Pros: Hiking trail, sweeping river views, whirlpool bath in B&B. Con: Cabins close together.

My family and I stayed in one of the Micmac cabins for several nights last June; though the cabins are close the whole 'farm' is quite peaceful and secluded, on a rural road but still not far from Machias. There's an apple orchard next to the house and
Our cabin had one main room (table, 2 full beds, kitchen, closet) and a bathroom, and was neatly kept with everything we needed in the kitchen (dishes, etc.)
Perhaps the most memorable thing that happened during our stay there was the time we sighted a couple of seals in the river, popping their heads in and out of the water.
