When to Go to Maine
Maine's dramatic coastline and pure natural beauty welcome visitors year-round, but note that many smaller museums and attractions are open only for high season—from Memorial Day to mid-October—as are many of the waterside attractions and eateries.
Summer begins in earnest on July 4, and many smaller inns and hotels from Kittery on up to the Bar Harbor region fill up early on weekends. Fall, with its fiery foliage, is when many inns and hotels are booked months in advance by leaf-peeping visitors. After Halloween, hotel rates drop significantly until ski season begins around Thanksgiving. Along the coast, bed-and-breakfasts that remain open will often rent rooms at far lower prices than in summer.
In spring, the third Sunday in March is designated as Maine Maple Sunday, and farms throughout the state open their doors to visitors not only to watch sap turn into golden syrup but to sample the sweet results.
