Fodor's Review

The home itself is a historical gold mine, made grand with unusual maritime architectural touches by a shipbuilder in 1784. It was later home to the great-uncle of beloved writer Ralph Waldo Emerson (who spent many youthful summers in the house), and is believed to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad. Notice the sliding wooden panels in the windows, said to keep inhabitants safe from the soaring arrows of irate Native Americans. The elegance of the wide-plank pine floors remains, as does some remarkable original tile work around the many fireplaces. Spacious rooms are filled with antiques and colorful quilts, and all of them have working fireplaces. Innkeepers Kathy and John Daamen provide a shuttle to area beaches and operate the Mainely Quilts gift shop next door.
