Allagash Canoe Trips. Run by a husband and wife, both championship paddlers and Registered Maine Guides, this operator offers day, overnight and weeklong canoe trips on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, the Moose and St. John rivers, and the East and West branches of the Penobscot River. White-water canoe and kayak trips are run on the Kennebec and Dead rivers. Rafting

North Country Rivers. From spring to fall, North Country Rivers runs white-water rafting trips on the Dead and Kennebec rivers in The Forks in western Maine, and on the West Branch of Penobscot River outside Millinocket in the North Woods. North Country's 55-acre resort south of The Forks in Bingham has cabin and cottage rentals, a restaurant, pub, and store. Its Millinocket base is at Big Moose Inn.
