Whitehall Inn Review

The oldest part of the Whitehall is an 1834 white-clapboard sea captain's home, and much of the rest of this historic lodging was built in the early 1900s. The Millay Room preserves memorabilia of the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, who grew up in the area and read her poetry at the Whitehall. Some baths have been updated with walk-in showers, while others have original claw-foot tubs. Look for white bedspreads and many original furnishings, like dark-grained headboards. The restaurant, Vincent's, serves traditional and creative American cuisine, including seafood specialties.

    B&B experience

I expected (from the flyer) a grander place and more of a waterfront experience but if we hadn't seen the brochure we wouldn't have been as surprised. It's really just a large B&B with a casual but fairly cramped feeling. We heard every creak (and toilet flush) from our neighbors but it was a comfortable sleep. The breakfast was superb!

    Enjoyed our stay

We were only able to stay one night, but will come back for longer. The public areas are cozy and the room was terrific. I LOVED the king mattress--probably the best night's sleep I've had in a long time. We also had great cross breezes from having windows on 3 sides of the room (rm 45). Breakfast was outstanding--French toast on homemade bread was yummy and so was the Eggs Benedict on a homemade English muffin. Since our room was at the front of the inn, we did hear the traffic somewhat. We were told this could be a possibility when making the reservation, but chose it over a quieter room because of the windows. We can't wait to come back and sit on the front porch in rocking chairs and talk more with the owners. Nice place and nice people.
