If you're traveling with a dog, you'll find few more accommodating spots in Maine than this out-of-the-way place on Rutherford Island. One room even has its own fenced-in dog run. Though it's a six-minute drive to the water, the inn has a window-lined fourth-floor "observatory," where on a clear day you might see all the way to Monhegan Island. On a rainy day, relax here with all the books and games. The 2.3-acre property is surrounded by a 2-acre greenbelt, so it's quite private. The main house has guest rooms with four-season electric fireplaces, microwaves, coffee pots, and two-person jetted baths (plus separate showers).
