The Greater Portland area, especially downtown and the Old Port, have many establishments doing business out of old, historic buildings. As a result, ADA-compliance can be hit-or-miss—but it is becoming more prevalent every year. The larger, modern hotels are more likely to have elevators and fully accessible rooms than the smaller, more historic bed-and-breakfast inns. In 2006, the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Greater Portland listed 36 restaurants as being compliant.

All buses operated by the Metro Greater Portland Transit District are equipped with lifts or ramps, and Casco Bay Lines ferries are wheelchair accessible as well. Smaller vessels may be a different story, so calling in advance is a good idea.
