Despite modern appointments such as elevators and whirlpool baths in some rooms, this 1850 Greek Revival home provides a pleasantly old-fashioned, country-inn experience just a few minutes' walk from L. L. Bean. Guest rooms have print fabrics and reproductions of Federal quarter-canopy beds. Ask for a second-floor, garden-facing room. The formal Maine Dining Room ($$$-$$$$) specializes in contemporary American regional (and organic) cuisine such as pan-roasted lobster and all-natural filet mignon. The casual yet excellent Broad Arrow Tavern ($$-$$$$) serves heartier fare and has a charming seasonal patio. Inn rates include a full buffet breakfast and afternoon tea. Pros: Excellent on-site dining, walk to shopping district. Con: Building updates over the years have diminished some authenticity.
