Portland Head Light

Fodor's Review:

Historic Portland Head Light, familiar to many from photographs and Edward Hopper's painting Portland Head-Light (1927), was commissioned by George Washington in 1790. The towering white stone lighthouse stands over the keeper's house, a white home with a blazing red roof. Besides a harbor view, its park has walking paths and picnic facilities. The keeper's house is now the Museum at Portland Head Light. The lighthouse is in Fort Williams Park, about 2 mi from the town center.
