Portland Observatory

Fodor's Review:

This observatory on Munjoy Hill was built in 1807 by Captain Lemuel Moody, a retired sea captain, as a signal tower. It used lights as both aids for sea navigation and as a warning for the approach of enemy forces. It is the last remaining signal tower in the country and is held in place by 122 tons of ballast. After visiting the small museum at the base, you can climb to the Orb deck and take in views of Portland, the islands, and inland to the White Mountains.

  • Cost: $6
  • Open: May 26-Columbus Day, daily 10-5
