Founded in 1912 as a mail-order merchandiser of products for hunters, guides, and anglers, L. L. Bean attracts 3.5 million shoppers a year to its giant store (open 24 hours a day) in the heart of Freeport's shopping district. You can still find the original hunting boots, along with cotton, wool, and silk sweaters; camping and ski equipment; comforters; and hundreds of other items for the home, car, boat, and campsite.
