What's on Tap: Microbreweries

One of the nation's microbrew hotbeds, Maine is home to more than 30 breweries, and several of the larger ones—Allagash, Geary's, and Shipyard—are in and around Portland. These breweries are open for tours and tastings, but beer lovers may prefer the smaller brewpubs that make their own beer and serve it fresh from their own taps in neighborhood taverns. In the Old Port you'll find Gritty McDuff's and Sebago Brewing Company. In South Portland there's Sea Dog Brewing Company. If you're in town in November, check out the Maine Brewer's Festival (www.mainebrew.com). Pick up the Maine Beer Trail, a guide to Maine's breweries, at a local brew pub, or download it at the Maine Brewers' Guild website (www.mainebrewersguild.org).
