Getting Around

Portland is wonderfully walkable; an able-bodied explorer can easily take in the Old Port, the Downtown/Arts District, and the Western Promenade. Narrated trolley tours are also available. However, to discover some of the other areas outlined in this chapter, such as Portland Head Light and Freeport (home of L.L. Bean), a car is necessary. To get to most any island in Casco Bay hop aboard a waterfront ferry.
