Samoset Resort Review

Occupying 230 waterfront acres on the Rockland-Rockport town line, this all-encompassing resort offers luxurious rooms and suites, each with a private balcony or patio and an ocean, garden, or golf course view. As part of a major renovation completed in 2012, all were refurbished and updated in warm color schemes, three new waterfront cottages were built, and two of three restaurants were replaced. Jackets aren't required for men at La Bella Vita Ristorante, as they were at its predecessor. Outside there's a stone terrace with a fire pit. Inside, the space flows into the more casual Enoteca Lounge, which has an antipasto bar. By the new sloped-entry pool is a new open-air bar. Still around is the Clubhouse Grille, alongside the 18-hole course, which Golf Digest has ranked one of the region's best.

    An Almost Perfect Resort

Our first stay at the Samoset was enjoyable. We knew at the get go that there was no beach and we were ok with that. The lovely zero entry pool provided a relaxing experience on a hot summer day. The tiered seating allowed for views of the pool and ocean. Waitress service is fantastic!

The oceanfront room was very large. The views were nice. Our balcony was perfect for morning coffee but the AC unit vented right on our legs so we felt hot air on a cool summer morning.

La Bella Vita provides wonderful food for dinner. The pasta is flown in from Italy and the food seems like it is as well. Ocean views are a plus. Try the second tier banquette for a private experience and a view.

The spa is just ok. Very sparse in its design. Therapists are fair.

Front desk needs some tweaking. The gentleman who "welcomed" us seemed more interested in another party who needed a spot to cook their lobsters. We felt second rate. Later, we asked for directions to the Children's Chapel. When we got into the car, they were for another town. Thankfully we found the way ourselves.

    Would we return? Maybe.
