The Sarah Orne Jewett House, a sturdy Georgian-style home, dates to 1774 and reflects the shipbuilding wealth of its time. Sarah Orne Jewett was born in the house in 1849, lived elsewhere for a time, then came back to her house of birth to reside with her sister for the remainder of her life. The view from her desk in the top-floor hall looks down on the town's major intersection, which indeed gave her material for her novels, including The Country of the Pointed Firs. Now a museum, the house contains period furnishings. Jewett's bedroom remains as she left it. To reach the Sarah Orne Jewett House, follow Route 236 until you reach the center of South Berwick; at the division of Routes 236 and 4, look for signs; the home is right in the center of town.
