The variation in lodgings along the Maine Coast has a lot to do with individual zoning laws. Towns like the Kennebunks, York Harbor, and Ogunquit have a much higher number of small inns and bed-and-breakfasts, while York Beach, Old Orchard Beach, Wells, and Kittery seem to be filled with one hotel-motel complex after another. U.S. 1 is famous (or infamous, depending on how you look at it) for its rampant commercialism, and its lodging options usually show it. A stay in one of the restored mansions will cost you quite a bit more than a night at a sprawling hotel, but almost all lodging establishments offer off-season price reductions and special package rates.
