The only route for exploring this region is the historic two-lane U.S. 1, which winds all the way along Penobscot Bay, from Rockland to Bucksport and farther. Although the distance from Rockland to Bucksport is only 45 mi, the going is slow; U.S. 1 is an old highway, and the summer months bring heavily congested traffic. There are some impressive coastal views along the drive, but don't expect to see the ocean continuously. The water is blocked for a good part of the way by woods, which are beautiful in their own right. Driving the entire distance without stopping should take about two hours, but you'll probably want to stop along the way and spend a day or two in some of the more colorful towns.
