Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory Tower

  • Address: 711 Ft. Knox Rd., at U.S. 1, Bucksport, ME, 04416

Fodor's Review:

This new, 2,120-foot-long bridge, opened at the end of 2006, has been declared an engineering marvel. It is certainly beautiful to look at or to drive over (no toll). Spanning the Penobscot River at Bucksport, the bridge replaced the old Waldo-Hancock bridge, built in 1931. The best part of it is the three-story observation tower at the top of the western pilon. This was the first bridge observation tower built in America and, at 420 feet above the river, it's the highest bridge observation tower in the world. An elevator shoots you to the top. The cost is $5. Don't miss it—the view, which encompasses the river, the bay, and the sea beyond, is breathtaking.
