Since Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory are two of the top sights along Maine's Mid-Coast region, you can visit both of them at the same time, since they are side by side. Your $5 ticket to the observatory will include free admission to Fort Knox. The largest fort in Maine, Fort Knox was built between 1844 and 1869 when the British were disputing the borderline between Maine and New Brunswick. The fort was intended to protect the Penobscot River valley from a British naval attack. The fort never saw any actual fighting, but it was used for troop training and a garrison during the Civil War and the Spanish-American War. Visitors are welcome to explore the fort's passageways and many rooms, but few areas of it are accessible to those in wheelchairs. Guided tours are available during the summer season.
