The second-largest city in the state (Portland being the first), Bangor is about 20 mi from the coast and is the unofficial capital of northern Maine. Back in the 19th century its most important product and export in the "Queen City" was lumber from the state's vast North Woods. Bangor's location on the Penobscot River helped make it the world's largest lumber port. A 31-foot-tall statue of legendary lumberman Paul Bunyan stands in front of the Bangor Auditorium.
Lumber is no longer at the heart of its economy, but Bangor has thrived in other ways. Because of its airport, Bangor has become a gateway to Mount Desert Island, Bar Harbor, and Acadia National Park.
Bangor International is also the first American airport where troops returning from Iraq touch down. There is always a welcoming party of locals waiting for them, no matter what hour of the day or night. Free cell-phone use, gifts, and eats are available to any soldier.
The city is also home to author Stephen King, who lives in an old Victorian house on West Broadway notable for its bat-winged iron gate. King and his wife, Tabitha, are active members of the community and contribute to local charities, the arts, and education.
