A car is helpful if you want to get away from the towns, as the remoter areas are not served by public transportation. Buses from Boston's South Station and Logan Airport serve many coastal towns, including Portland, Brunswick, and Bath. The Downeaster Amtrak train carries passengers to and from Portland and Boston's North Station. Visitors to the area also can take a wonderful scenic train ride between Brunswick, Bath, and Wiscasset to Rockland and back from late May to mid-October (see www.maineeasternrailroad.com for details).
No matter where you stay, there are plenty of places to explore within a few miles. Brunswick is only a half hour from the Harpswell Islands. Phippsburg and Georgetown are easily accessible from Bath. You can stop for lunch in Wiscasset and then continue to Boothbay Harbor for an afternoon of shopping. Take at least a day to explore the Pemaquid Peninsula, where you'll find a famous lighthouse, a museum, and art gallery perched on rocky ledges, and a tranquil beach. Farther north, Thomaston is a good place to stay if you want to explore the St. George and Cushing peninsulas, and the towns of Tenants Harbor and Port Clyde. Marshall Point Lighthouse is in Port Clyde, as is the departure point for Monhegan Island—a great place to spend a day or two hiking through woods and along spectacular cliffs.
