From Route 1 just east of Thomaston, take Route 131 south 6 mi, then turn left on Route 73 for one mile, right at Clark Island Road 1½ miles, all the way to the end of the road to find this lodging dating from 1928. Sitting on four acres right on the water, it was originally built to house granite workers from nearby quarries. The annex was the chapel where the stonecutters and their families worshipped. Rooms are comfortably furnished with antique furniture, and the beds are piled high with colorful quilts. Most rooms have views of the water, and the semi-suite rents for $200 a night. A recent addition here is an apartment with kitchen, gas fireplace, washer and dryer, ceiling fans, cable TV and phone, as well as a private deck, water access, and two kayaks for use by apartment guests. The apartment rents for $200 a night. Chef extraordinaire Chris Seiler, most recently from the Samoset Resort, wins awards for his creative cuisine served in the inn's dining room ($$$). You might want to start with the Caribbean jerk grilled shrimp brochettes, or steamed great eastern mussels, and move on to pecan-crusted salmon, bacon-wrapped tenderloin, or baked stuffed haddock. The dessert menu might feature pastry chef Meg Joseph's lemon pudding cake, Key lime square, or a mini créme bruleé. Pros: The stellar food, some air-conditioned rooms. Con: Pets allowed in some rooms.
