At the Colonial Pemaquid Restoration, set on a small peninsula jutting into the Pemaquid River, English mariners established a fishing and trading settlement in the early 17th century. The excavations at Fort William Henry, begun in the mid-1960s, have turned up thousands of artifacts from the settlement, including the remains of an old customs house, a tavern, a jail, a forge, and several homes. Some older items are from earlier American Indian settlements. The state operates a museum that displays many of these artifacts. The Colonial Pemaquid Tavern is on-site, as are a picnic area and rest rooms.
