The town of Newcastle, between the Sheepscot and the Damariscotta rivers, was settled in the early 1600s. The earliest inhabitants planted apple trees, but the town later became an industrial center, home to several shipyards and a couple of mills. The oldest Catholic church in New England, St. Patrick's, is here, and the church still rings its original Paul Revere bell to call parishioners to worship. Newcastle's B&Bs put you close to everything on the Boothbay and Pemaquid peninsulas.
