Stonington is rather isolated, which has helped retain its small-town flavor. The boutiques and galleries lining Main Street cater mostly to out-of-towners, but the town remains a fishing community at heart. The principal activity is at the waterfront, where boats arrive overflowing with the day's catch. The sloped island that rises to the south is Isle au Haut, which contains a remote section of Acadia National Park; it's accessible by mail boat from Stonington.
