Pentagoet Inn

  • Price range: $$-$$$$
  • Location: Castine

Fodor's Review:

With period lithographs in the common rooms, claw-foot tubs in the bathrooms, and a cozy pub, the owners of this inn strive to create an air of romance. Guest rooms are in the Queen Anne-style main building with a three-story turret and numerous gables, or in a nearby 18th-century sea captain's home. The most memorable is Room 3, which has a balcony covered with flowers and views of town. With tables in the dining room or on a porch, the restaurant ($$$) specializes in fresh fish. You might try the Stonington crab cake appetizer, followed by the seared duck on a Belgian endive salad. The perfect finale is profiteroles with vanilla ice cream and chocolate ganache sauce. Enjoy a full breakfast in a room adjacent to the garden, and freshly baked cookies each afternoon. Pros: At the center of Castine's bustling town life, superb breakfast buffet. Con: Rooms somewhat cluttered and creaky.
