Because it is relatively undiscovered, the Blue Hill Peninsula does not have what you would call a high season. The best time to visit is from late May or early June to mid-October (the Blue Hill Peninsula Chamber of Commerce does not open until Memorial Day weekend, and the Deer Isle-Stonington Chamber of Commerce begins its season in mid-June; see Essentials at the end of the chapter for contact information). There are few lodging options, so it's a good idea to reserve rooms well in advance. Outside of these months you will find that many restaurants and hotels have closed for the season. During the summer months, galleries open their doors, concerts enliven the evenings, and a handful of festivals draw locals and visitors alike. Check with the local chambers of commerce for schedules of events.
