America leads the pack in accommodations and restaurants when it comes to providing for people with disabilities. By Maine state law, any new accommodations or restaurants must provide handicapped access. Older facilities, such as historical B&Bs, can be "grandfathered in" because making the necessary changes could adversely affect the architectural integrity of the property. When you call about "handicapped accessibility," make sure the person you are talking to knows what that phrase means: the building is accessible, the room or restaurant is accessible, and the bathroom is accessible.
