Shaped like an upside-down "U"(some have likened it to the look of a lobster claw), Mount Desert Island is relatively easy to navigate. It may, however, take longer to reach some of the more distant points than you might expect. Somes Sound, the only fjord on the East Coast, runs up the middle of the island, requiring drivers at the ends of the "U" to drive quite a long distance to reach a town that is actually quite close as the crow flies. Beyond the geographical barriers, summer traffic can slow your progress and make finding a parking space, especially in Bar Harbor, nearly impossible. To combat this problem, Acadia National Park has created a free bus system called the Island Explorer. The system, which operates during the high season (Memorial Day through Labor Day), links the island's villages and campgrounds. These propane-propelled buses, which are air-conditioned and outfitted with bike racks, are kinder to the environment than most cars.

Acadia's Park Loop Road provides an excellent overview of the island, but to get a feel for the island's natural beauty, you must leave your car behind. Instead, seek as many opportunities as you can for hiking, biking, and boating.
