Woodlawn Museum

Fodor's Review:

Between 1824 and 1828, Colonel John Black built an elegant Federal-style house on an 180-acre estate of fields and woods. Inside are an especially fine elliptical flying staircase and period artifacts from the three generations of the family that lived here. Outside, Woodlawn has 2 mi of walking trails that Colonel Black used as a bridle path. As a visitor, you can wander through several different gardens. The formal garden, enclosed by a lilac hedge, features flowers popular in the 19th century, including iris, daylilies, and phlox. The Woodlawn Museum is also the home of the increasingly popular Ellsworth Antiques Show, which takes place in mid-August.

  • Cost: $7.50, free access to gardens and grounds
  • Open: May-Oct., Tues.-Sat. 10-5, Sun 1-4
