Mount Desert Island is home to Acadia National Park—Maine's most visited attraction. More than 2 million people a year come to climb (mostly by car) the miles of 19th-century carriage roads leading to the stunning peaks and vistas of the island's mountains. Each curve of the road reveals breathtaking scenes of cliff and rock set amid the surrounding bays. Hikers and cyclists enjoy a less-crowded experience on off-road jaunts and trails. In the northeast quadrant is Bar Harbor, filled with tourists and all the accompanying attractions; the smaller towns of Southwest Harbor and Bass Harbor reveal quieter characteristics. Wherever you go, ever-present is the peak of Cadillac Mountain, heralded as the first place in the nation to see the sun rise.
