Mount Desert Campground Review

Near the village of Somesville, this campground has one of the best locations imaginable. It lies at the head of Somes Sound, the only fjord on the East Coast of North America. The campground prefers tents, so vehicles longer than 20 feet are not allowed. Many sites are along the waterfront, and all are tucked into the woods for a sense of privacy. Restrooms and showers are placed sensibly throughout the campground and are kept meticulously clean. Canoes and kayaks are available for rent, and there's a dock with access to the ocean. The Gathering Place has baked goods in the morning and ice cream and coffee in the evening.

I have been in this campground almost every summer for the past 40 years, and have made life-long friends there, as have my children. This is a place to relax and enjoy nature. No video game room, no bands on Friday night. Sit and read a book while the gulls call, enjoy the pristine waterfront with the kids or explore the national park. The bathrooms are always the cleanest anywhere (cleaned thoroughly twice a day). The only downside is that because the same people come back year after year you should make reservations in advance for peak season to be near the water, but all the sites are great.

    >:( arrived at camp 8am - host gave me map she had marked up then told me of camps sites good for kids (after a 7 hour drive.) Views great, landed at site, unpacked then set up tent and were ready for an adventure when someone came over and told me we had to go to the front office, seems the woman was looking at the map from yesterday. Told us we had to break down tent and move, not wiling to work with us or help us at all, (guy at desk just sort of a jerk about it too) just a get up and move attitude when mistake was theirs. I packed up and moved to another campground. Unless the attitude changes don't bother staying here - you can get the same beautiful view at much friendlier campgrounds 5 minutes down the road.
