Getting Around by Bus and Streetcar
Within New Orleans, the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) operates a public bus and streetcar (not "trolley") transportation system with interconnecting lines throughout the city. The buses are generally clean and on time. Buses run on a regular schedule from about 6 am to 6 pm. Smoking, eating, and drinking are not permitted on RTA vehicles. Buses are wheelchair accessible; streetcars are not.
The riverfront streetcar covers a 2-mile route along the Mississippi River, connecting major sights from the end of the French Quarter (Esplanade Avenue) to the New Orleans Convention Center (Julia Street). Nine stops en route include the French Market, Jackson Brewery, Canal Place, the World Trade Center, the Riverwalk, and the Hilton Hotel. This streetcar operates daily 7 am until 10:30 pm, passing each stop every 20 minutes.
The historic streetcars of St. Charles Avenue run from St. Charles Avenue at Common Street to the Riverbend at Carrollton Avenue roughly every 20 minutes. This line continues on along Carrollton Avenue and stops at Claiborne Avenue in Mid-City. Streetcar service on St. Charles Avenue runs 24 hours a day, though wait times can be as long as 30 minutes between 11:30 pm and 3 am.
A third streetcar line runs along Canal Street from the river near Harrah's Casino to either City Park or the Cemeteries. Going from Harrah's Casino to the Cemeteries, it passes every 15 minutes. As it gets closer to City Park, it passes every 40 minutes. The Canal Street line operates from 5 am to about 3 am, with longer waits after midnight. A $135 million expansion of track, set to run past the CBD and the French Quarter, then eastward into residential Tremé, Faubourg Marigny, and Bywater is in the works for 2012–13.
Bus and streetcar fare is $1.25 exact change plus 25¢ for transfers. Unlimited passes, valid on both buses and streetcars, cost $3 for one day, $9 for three days, and $55 for a month. The daily passes are available from streetcar and bus operators; three-day and monthly passes are available at many local hotels and at most Walgreens.
