This impressive, white-columned 1883 Victorian hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The wide veranda, set with cloth-covered tables for outdoor dining or cocktails, is very inviting, as are the two parlors furnished with period pieces. Dark and intimate, the lounge is a favorite with locals and has excellent live progressive jazz Monday through Thursday; there's also a Sunday jazz brunch. One of the most impressive staircases you may ever climb leads to the large—though somewhat sparsely furnished—rooms. If you can wangle a weekend Mardi Gras reservation here, you'll have one of the best seats on St. Charles Avenue for the nightly parades. Pros: exquisite architecture; having a cocktail on the veranda is one of the city's great pleasures; perfect parade-watching spot. Cons: second-floor rooms feel a bit stale (try to book on the third floor).
