John Kennedy Toole's comic masterpiece, A Confederacy of Dunces, begins under the clock of D. H. Holmes department store on Canal Street, now this well-maintained upscale hotel. In Toole's honor, the clock and a statue of the novel's antihero, Ignatius J. Reilly, remain. Rooms at the hotel are large, with high ceilings and neutral decor; some have columns and beams, remnants of the original building. Balcony rooms overlook Bourbon Street, Dauphine Street, or one of two interior courtyards. Three suites with whirlpool baths surround an atrium. The hotel dining room, Le Chatelaine, is open only for breakfast.
