When these were built in the late 1800s, houses were taxed by the width and height of their facades: working-class homes were usually narrow and long. Sometimes a second floor was added to the back half of the house, giving it the architectural designation of "camelback." The camelback and the gingerbread-type decoration on porches were popular details at the turn of the 20th century.
