Sukho Thai
Sukho Thai Review
Certainly the most extensive Thai restaurant in the area, Sukho Thai fits snugly into its arty neighborhood with servers wearing all black, an art gallery approach to decorating, and brightly colored dishes. Dry and wet curries are so vibrant that the pastes seem made to order. Whole fried fish with three spicy chili sauces is a showstopper. Creative house-made desserts take the form of barely sweetened coconut custard and black-rice pudding. The most imaginative and extensive tea menu in the area compensates for the lack of a liquor license, although you can bring your own wine for a $5 corkage fee.

I love French Quarter, but sometimes you just need a break from it. This Thai joint kinda defines the rising Marigny neighborhood for me. Very laid-back and relaxed, not a bit of pretense. If you are over 40, you may not get it. (Then again, maybe you do.) Sukho is just nice comfortable place to get an excellent meal at a good value. This is the kind of place you go to decompress from the FQ madness, and have a long, leisurely meal with friends, maybe tucked back in one of the "cubby" tables toward the back. You have to "brown-bag" in your own wine, or you can do what the host/server recommended and make the half-block walk up the street to the nearest bar for a "geaux cup" to bring to the restaurant, which I did. I even went out to get a 2nd cocktail between courses. It's a bit inconvenient, but novel and fun. It's that kind of place. My vegan friend enjoyed the wide selection they had for him to choose from. You wouldn't go to NOLA to eat there. But if you're in NOLA you should. And you should check out the bars/clubs on Frenchmen St. after. If I lived in New Orleans, I would live and hang out in the Marigny and eat at Sukho three times a week.
