Many of New Orleans's most talented young musicians, artists, and writers pass through this high-school arts program, where the faculty includes professional artists from around the country. Although the school covers all major artistic disciplines, the music program has been particularly successful: well-known alums include Donald Harrison, Terence Blanchard, Harry Connick Jr., and the Marsalis brothers. Following Hurricane Katrina, NOCCA became a combination National Guard barracks and command center for fire and rescue vehicles. Classes resumed in 2006, and the school is once again hosting its celebrated performing arts events.
