Mulate's Review

Across the street from the Convention Center, this large venue seats 400, and the dance floor quickly fills with couples twirling and two-stepping to authentic Cajun bands from the countryside. Regulars love to drag first-timers to the floor for impromptu lessons. The home-style Cajun cuisine is acceptable, but what matters is nightly music.

    Mulate's Review

Stay away from Mulate's. It was our last night in New Orleans and we wanted some authentic cajun food and atmosphere. On the face of it Mulate's was the perfect choice. I wanted to like the place, but I cannot begin to express my disappointment at our expereince there. I can forgive the cheesy cajun decor. I can forgive the way-too-loud cajun band playing country and western hits. That's right, country AND western. I can even forgive our less than friendly waitress. What I cannot forgive is bad food at inflated prices. We're talking frozen food service appetizers, crab cakes, and "twice baked" potatoes. A too small piece of blackened catfish carefully hidden under a puddle of canned crawfish etoufee. A cheeseburger that was so burned that my son could have eaten charcoal briquettes dipped in ketchup. My wife's ribeye was just OK, but not worth $28. The vegetables did bring back memories - memories of military chow halls and green/gray vegetables that have sat in water all day. The real insult is that not only was this the single worst meal that we ate in our five day trip, it was also the most expensive. The final tally was $152 with tip for four people, soft drinks only. (I didn't feel like paying $10 for a hurricane). We got back in the car, collectively said "yuck", and hot footed it to Cafe Dumonde for beignets to get rid of the taste. Was I clear enough here? Of the 1300 restaurants in New Orleans Mulate's should be #1300 on your bucket list.
