Hampton Inn and Suites–Convention Center

1201 Convention Center Blvd., New Orleans, Louisiana 70130, USA

Cameron Todd

Convenience and comfort are here, sure, but business travelers and festival goers alike will be pleased by the charm and character of these converted warehouses steps away from the Convention Center. Even if the Convention Center isn't your primary destination, this hotel lands you in a quiet neighborhood centrally located between the Lower Garden District and the CBD, with pleasant views of the Mississippi River.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Be aware that this hotel is also steps away from a cruise port; the parking lot and rooms can fill up on days when passengers are getting ready to disembark (holidays, and weekends during the summer).

room

Rooms have high ceilings and large windows, some overlooking the small park down below. The 288 guest rooms are clean and spacious, with options to add a wet bar set up with a microwave and mini fridge, or a sofa bed.

bathroom

Large shower heads and Neutrogena bath products.

lobby

The lobby has the great architectural features of the original warehouse, like high beamed ceilings, exposed brick, and original hardwood floors. Enjoy fresh cookies at check-in and tea and coffee throughout the day.

Valet parking rates are high here (the advertised $14/night is only if you're going on a cruise), so shop around some of the lots in the neighborhood if you're budget-conscious.

pool

There is a small pool in an enclosed courtyard, with lounge chairs, patio tables, and complimentary lemon water and towels.

YOU SHOULD KNOW If there's a busy event, convention, or cruise in town, public spaces in this hotel are likely to become crowded, with waits at the buffet line or crowds at the pool.

gym

The gym has a dozen cardio machines, weight machines, and equipment (and space) for free weights and stretching.

dining

The hotel serves free hot breakfast with eggs, waffles and fruit. For those without time to sit and eat, the hotel also offers a complimentary on-the-go option.

drinking

The small lobby bar is open from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Guests receive a two-for-one drink coupon upon check in.

LOCATION

Getting Around

It's about a 12-minute walk to the streetcar on St. Charles, which will take you Uptown or towards the French Quarter. It's easy to catch a cab or Uber from the hotel, though during events expect a line for cabs outside of the Convention Center.

Restaurants

A short walk to the Lower Garden District and you can explore less touristy, local favorites like Fat Boy Pantry (12-minute walk) serving fresh juices and inventive breakfasts and sandwiches. Aside from great cocktails, Bakery Bar (8-minute walk) serves brunch, delicious small bites, and doberge cake, a New Orleans specialty. Walk instead towards the Warehouse District and to La Boca (8-minute walk), an intimate Argentine steakhouse with a great wine list.

Bars

A backyard-sized brewery in the Lower Garden District, Courtyard Brewery (10-minute walk) has great beer and nightly food trucks. Barrelproof (10-minute walk) is a favorite among industry folks, mostly for its extensive whiskey selection and inventive pop-up kitchen specials. French Truck Coffee across the street makes some of the best caffeinated brews in the city.

WHY WE LIKE IT

Coming in town for a convention or concert, it's pleasantly surprising that this convenient hotel is housed in such a beautiful old building, with great views from the rooms. If you don't have reason to stay near the Convention Center, you might want to avoid the hotel during big conferences or events, when crowds are large and rates can surge, but otherwise, this area of town can still be a pleasant jumping off point for exploring less touristy neighborhoods.
