DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel New Orleans
300 Canal St., New Orleans, Louisiana 70130, USA
A fairly basic hotel with a sunny pool and large, open rooms. Across the street from Harrah's Casino, this location lands you in walking distance to the French Quarter and many other sights and promises great views of the Quarter and downtown from rooms up above.
Spacious rooms have oversized, comfy beds, wide dresser/desk combinations, and amenities like coffee makers, flat screen TVs and USB ports on nightstands. Select rooms include views of the river and French Quarter.
King rooms with a city or river view are typically $10-20 more than a standard, and worth the small upcharge.
Bathrooms are narrow, with modern glass showers.
The lobby is open and bright, with some seating areas and a small gift shop. Enjoy chocolate chip cookies upon arrival.
The sunny upper deck is a nice lounge area, and the pool is large enough for families or exercise.
The fitness room as a mirrored wall, a few cardio machines, and free weights.
Both PJ's Coffee and WOW Cafe are local, casual chains in town, with expected menus of danishes and hamburgers, respectively, and some New Orleans flair added, like chicory coffee and spicy Cajun wings. A nice open space and large windows looking out into the CBD add atmosphere to the PJ's coffee shop.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Dining here is best for a coffee or grabbing a quick breakfast from the complimentary buffet. In lieu of mediocre pub grub for lunch or dinner, we recommend exploring one of the fantastic restaurants withing walking distance from the hotel.
Downstairs you'll find a large, casual bar, where you can conveniently grab a beer or cocktail and wander around the rest of the lobby.
The hotel offers a shuttle from the airport. Stubborn traffic and high valet rates make having a car somewhat of a hassle in the CBD, especially when so much is within walking distance and the Canal Street streetcar (2-minute walk) can take you to other areas of town.
If you're staying at the Doubletree and want a 5-star meal while in town, make a reservation at August (2-minute walk) ahead of time. Though you might have to fight the brunch crowds, Ruby Slipper Cafe (3-minute walk) is great for indulgent sweet and savory dishes, and Mother's (4-minute walk) is a favorite greasy spoon for po' boys and more.
The hotel is located directly across the street from Harrah's Casino (2-minute walk). Avoid tourist traps in this part of town: if you're looking for a casual bar, head across Canal Street to the Quarter and go to Chart Room (6-minute walk) or Bourbon House (8-minute walk) For a nice cocktail and romantic atmosphere, try Loa (5-minute walk) or the bar at Compere Lapin (5-minute walk).
WHY WE LIKE IT
It's a standard hotel, notable for its roomy digs and convenient location. Besides location, several other services make it convenient for a business trip, like the airport shuttle, meeting rooms, photocopier and printer on site. Though decor can be drab, there is some New Orleans-specific flair here and there to color your trip.
