21C Museum Hotel Review

Four-foot tall red plastic penguins line the roof of this boutique hotel and modern art museum like friendly sentries. When it opened in 2006, 21C immediately attracted national acclaim for its elegant restoration of a 19th-century building, attention to service, and cutting-edge art collection. Guests mingle with gallery visitors and locals who are dining in the hotel's award-winning restaurant, Proof on Main. All of the designer-decorated rooms are spacious, but the best have private patios overlooking the city, where—on a sunny Kentucky morning—you can enjoy room-service breakfast while wearing a plush hotel bathrobe. At the end of the day, soak in the large bathtub while sipping bourbon from the silver julep cup provided in each room.

America's only museum devoted exclusively to art of this century also happens to be a cosmopolitan boutique hotel with a private spa, an award-winning restaurant (ingredients from the hotel's nearby farm), and a happening bar, which is a stop on the city's Urban Bourbon Trail. Edgy artwork—some playful, some provocative—is installed throughout, from the front sidewalk to the elevators to the spacious rooms. Be sure to reserve a room with a private patio, and be prepared to unwind into the decadently comfy beds or oversized bathtubs charmingly equipped with peppermint soap and rubber duckies.

    21C Museum Hotel Review

    Staying at 21c Museum Hotel really is like staying in a museum with exhibits in the lobby and artwork throughout the hotel. Our room was large with one wall of exposed brick, the staff was friendly and helpful - in fact, when we arrived for my birthday weekend, we found one of the iconic red penguins with a bouquet of balloons waiting in our room. And we enjoyed the nice bath amenities too. Finally, one of the best restaurants in town is right in the hotel, so a great meal and a fun bar is only steps away from your room.
