Chicago Sights

The Chicago Theatre Review

Grand and glitzy, the Chicago Theatre features a shrunk-down version of the Arc de Triomphe on its exterior; inside is a grand lobby patterned after the Royal Chapel at Versailles, with a staircase copied from the Paris Opera House. Murals decorate the auditorium walls and ceiling. When it opened its doors in 1921, it was tagged "the Wonder Theatre of the World"; since then, the seven-story, 3,600-seat space has served as a venue for films and famous entertainers that have included John Phillip Sousa, Duke Ellington, Jack Benny, Frank Sinatra, Prince, Ellen DeGeneres, Beyoncé, and Harry Connick Jr. You can stand on the stage where these legendary artists performed, go backstage, and peruse its autographed walls on a tour. Check the website for times.
