Chicago Sights

Halsted Street Review

Halsted near 18th Street was once home to a cluster of art galleries and studios that put Pilsen on the map as a go-to art destination. A large number of artists lived and worked in the mixed-use artists' community known as the Chicago Arts District, centered on Halsted Street and stretching from 16th Street to Cermak Road. With the downturn in the economy, many of the area's galleries have moved, either to River North or elsewhere. Still, there are many innovative spaces that remain. Studios are open by appointment only; a few have limited weekend hours. On the second Friday evening of each month many area artists open their studio doors to the public for the Second Fridays Gallery Night.
